Histoical Sketch

The Oklahoma Indian Art Gallery (OIAG) first opened in 1965, in south west Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 1979, Doris Littrell and Bob McCabe took over the business. Littrell was raised by a Comanche family in Apache, Oklahoma, and said they instilled in her a love of Native American art. During Littrell’s ownership the OIAG sold paintings, sculptures, baskets, pottery, rugs, jewelry, and other material culture items from Plains and Southwest Indians. She often held individual and group art exhibitions and sales at the Gallery. She also donated many artworks to community organizations, schools, and museums. In 2008, Littrell retired and closed the Gallery.

Scope & Content Note

The Oklahoma Indian Art Gallery Records consist of business materials created and used at the gallery between 1979-2008. The collection includes ten series divided by function and arranged alphabetically, in which the Visual Materials and Reference Files are the largest.

The Artist Files (1941, 1971-2005), arranged alphabetically, contain biographical information about artists featured at OIAG such as Doc Tate Nevaquaya, Jerome Tiger, Woody Crumbo, Benjamin Harjo Jr., and Bert Seabourn. Included in the folders are newspaper and magazine articles as well as publicity for exhibitions of their work at museums and other galleries.

The Business Files (1981-1999) contains non-financial business materials such as contracts and merchandise price lists.

The Calendars series (1987-2005) consists of yearly calendars that Doris Littrell used to keep track of day to day activities in the Gallery.

The Financials (1978-2004) contain receipts for items purchased from and for the Gallery. This series also contains sale records for the artwork.

The Letters series (1973-2005) contains materials mailed to OIAG from artists and patrons. Of note are the letters from people such as University of Oklahoma President David Boren, Native American art collector Arthur Silberman, and President George W. Bush.

The Publicity Materials (1979-2008) were created by the gallery, and include flyers, pamphlets, and other documents advertising different events at the Gallery.

The Reference Files (1951-2006), collected from artists and other sources, contain non-biographical research materials such as auction and exhibit catalogs, award ceremony programs, postcards, museum pamphlets and maps, Red Earth Festival programs, stories from specific Native American tribes, and descriptions of crafting pottery, weaving, and beading.

The Scrapbooks (undated) were put together by Doris Littrell or her staff, and have no discernible order or theme. They primarily contain publicity information about specific artists or the Gallery. Some artists featured in the scrapbooks are Bert Seabourn, Gary Montgomery, Jerome Tiger, Virginia Stroud, and Gary Yazzie.

The Visitor Books (1979-1987) document guests who attended Gallery events.

The Visual Materials series (1967-2005) contains media associated with the Gallery and the artists. There are negatives, photographs, slides, and transparencies of events and artists.

Notes to Researchers

Visual materials series:
The original arrangement of the negatives was maintained during processing. The description of each folder of negatives is the information Littrell wrote for that specific group. Folders noted as “[Miscellaneous]” are negatives Littrell did not label, and we did not investigate.
The arrangement of the photographs is mostly an imposed organization. They are arranged by artist (when that information is known) and by items sold. Littrell divided the photographs into those two categories.
The arrangement of the slides is an imposed organization. They are arranged by artist (when that information is known), date, or undated.
The arrangement of the transparencies is an imposed organization. They are arranged by artist (when that information is known) and unknown.

Searching the Records:
The simplest way to search the Records is by using an artist’s last name. Many of the folder titles are from information Littrell wrote, and she often only used last names.

Processing Information

The Records were acquired from Doris Littrell in 2008. They were processed according to current best practices in 2013.
