Michael Naranjo

Michael Naranjo, a blind Native American sculptor and Vietnam War veteran, is visiting the Museum to touch The End of the Trail. Naranjo will use his sense of touch to experience the larger-than-life plaster sculpture James Earle Fraser created in 1915 depicting a Native American warrior slumped over his weary horse. The experience will be filmed as part of a documentary being produced on Naranjo’s life and career titled Dream Touch Believe.

10:00 – 11:30 a.m. – The End of the Trail and Michael Naranjo
Visitors are invited to watch Michael Naranjo experience The End of the Trail through touch.

1:00 p.m. – Panel Discussion
Visitors are invited to a panel discussion at 1:00 p.m. featuring Michael and Laurie Naranjo (Michael’s wife), as well Jenna Winters (Michael’s daughter) and Bill Stengel, who are producing the documentary. The panel discussion will cover Michael’s career, his experiences touching The End of the Trail and other major art pieces and the Dream Touch Believe documentary.

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Touchable Art Experience
A sampling of Naranjo sculptures, as well as other touchable pieces from the Museum’s collection, will be on display throughout the day for visitors to experience through touch. Visitors can also view a trailer for Dream Touch Believe in the Museum Theater.

More About Michael Naranjo
Naranjo has adapted to “seeing” through the use of his hands, having lost his eyesight and much of his right hand due to a grenade explosion during the Vietnam War. He has traveled the world to “see” through touch, many renowned pieces of artwork including Michelangelo’s David, national treasures in Washington, D.C. and pieces at the Louvre. However, The End of the Trail is a piece Naranjo identifies with and has dreamed of touching for many years.
