The Code of the West
On the frontier during the 19th century in areas without official law and order, Westerners created a semblance of social order by living according to some unwritten principles often called “the Code of the West.” Always unofficial, in truth it was 20th century Western movies that codified those principles – on the 19th-century frontier areas without official law and order. Film historian Elizabeth Anthony, president of Reel Classics, hosts this short series of films illustrating major principles of “the Code.” This series continues on September 5, 12, and 19.
Wagon Master (1950)
Under the expert direction of John Ford, stalwarts Ben Johnson, Harry Carey, Jr., and Ward Bond lead a wagon train of Mormon settlers west to Utah Territory. Although the responses of the settlers and their hired wagon masters sometimes diverge in the face of unexpected predicaments, ultimately, principles of “the Code” help them find common ground when challenges arise on the trail. 86 minutes. NR. Appropriate for ages 10+.
Free Museum Admission every Wednesday until 11/14/18
