Girls with Guns
Women in Westerns generally fall into two predictable categories: good girls and good-time girls. But give them a gun and both become a lot more interesting! Although songwriter Irving Berlin famously asserted, “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun,” as seen in these lively female firearm yarns, Hollywood seemed to believe otherwise. Film historian Elizabeth Anthony, Reel Classics president, provides introductions and commentary.
The Paleface (1948)
Only superficially related to her historical namesake, sharpshooting scout Calamity Jane (Jane Russell) throws in with frontier dentist “Painless” Peter Potter (Bob Hope) in this hilarious Western spoof with gags and one-liners that will have you smiling for days. 91 minutes. Appropriate for ages 8+.
