Girls with Guns

Women in Westerns generally fall into two predictable categories: good girls and good-time girls.  But give them a gun and both become a lot more interesting! Although songwriter Irving Berlin famously asserted, “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun,” as seen in these lively female firearm yarns, Hollywood seemed to believe otherwise. Film historian Elizabeth Anthony, Reel Classics president, provides introductions and commentary.

Arizona (1940)

Surviving as a woman on her own in Arizona Territory requires Jean Arthur to defy some conventions and redefine others. Undermined and overwhelmed by the likes of William Holden and Warren William, gun-toting is just one of the techniques she uses to beat the men at their own game in this spectacular Civil War Western adventure. 125 minutes. Appropriate for ages 8+.
