Champion Bareback Bronc Rider, 1971-1975

One of the best bronc riders of his time, Joe Alexander was born in 1943 and grew up on a 10,000-acre ranch near Pinedale, Wyoming. An excellent athlete, he excelled in basketball, football and track in high school, and, with his brothers, got started in rodeo as a team roper.

In 1965 he won the all around championship at the Pinedale Roundup, competing in bareback riding, steer wrestling and team roping.

In 1966, as a representative of Casper College, Joe Alexander won the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s bareback riding title. During his college years, he contended in several events, including steer wrestling and bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding. Alexander began rodeoing full time in 1970, specializing in the bareback event, and qualified for the National Final Rodeo his first year out. He captured the bareback championship each of the next five years, earning the title “Alexander the Great,” from one admiring sports writer.

In 1979, Joe Alexander was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. He lives and ranches with his wife in Marysville, California.
