Vicki Adams

1951-

Oklahoma

Native American Vicki Herrera Adams was born in 1951 at Toppenish, Washington, on the Yakama Reservation. She began barrel racing and rick riding as a teenager, but her passion has always been in training and performing with her high-schooled horses. She trained in trick riding with Dick Griffith, and learned the art of dressage from the famed Glenn Randall.

Over several decades Adams has shown her famous dancing horses at rodeo venues from Calgary to San Antonio and from Fort Worth to Las Vegas. Among them were One Little Indian, Silverado, Butterfly, and Cherokee Smoke. She and her steeds have performed at the National Finals Rodeo numerous times and presented the American flag at the NFR from 1991 to 2002. They have been nominated as a PRCA Contract Act of the Year for 20 consecutive years (1982-2001), and won the title four times.

Vicki Adams and her husband Leon have also performed beyond the West, bringing the flavor of western horsemanship to appreciative audiences in Canada, Mexico, Finland, France, and Japan.

For her long support and many contributions to rodeo-and the perpetuation of western spirit and values-at home and abroad, Vicki Adams received the Tad Lucas Memorial Award in 2012.
