¡Viva México!

July 9 - October 17, 2021

Mexico’s independence from Spain had continental repercussions for the Americas. Specifically in the United States, formerly American citizens who swore allegiance to Spain were now Mexican citizens. These impresarios eventually helped Mexico gain its independence, and due to the despotic rule of dictator Santa Anna, eventually revolted against Mexico. These series of events were critical to developing the American West. Using material culture and art objects from the museum’s collection this exhibition will focus on how Mexican independence influenced the American West, especially the evolution of the American cowboy.
