One of the smallest, yet greatest bull riders ever in rodeo, Albert “Smokey” Snyder was born in 1908 at Cripple Creek, Colorado. Raised on ranches in western Canada, he entered his first rodeo at Hussar, Alberta, in 1923.

Smokey Snyder competed only in rough-stock events. In addition to his many championships, he captured the bareback title at the Easter Royal Show in Sidney, Australia, and the bareback-riding and bull-riding crowns at Tex Austin’s second London, England, rodeo in 1934. Always a leader in rodeo, Snyder served with the first directors of the Cowboys Turtle Association.

Smokey Snyde made his last rough-stock ride in 1946 at Reno, Nevada. He died in an auto accident in 1965.
