Steer Wrestler, Champion, 1941

One of Texas’ greatest bronc riders and bulldoggers, Hub Whiteman was born in 1910 and raised at Clarksville. He began performing in 1927, at age 17, with Milt Hinkle’s Wild West Show. Two years later he signed on with the Miller Brothers’ 101 Ranch and Wild West Show and entered full-time competition in 1930.

Hub Whiteman’s first season set a pattern for his career. He won the bronc riding in five of his first six rodeos. An all-around cowboy, he also competed in steer wrestling, calf roping, and bull riding. Whiteman was one of the few bronc twisters who could claim qualified rides on three of the sport’s rankest–Midnight, Five Minutes to Midnight (twice), and Hell’s Angel. In a 30-year period he won titles in all his events at most of the nation’s major rodeos. Capping his record, he earned the RAA steer wrestling championship in 1941.

Military service during World War II took him out of the arena, but after the war he competed until his retirement in the 1960s. In later years a rodeo judge, Hub Whiteman died in 1977.
