Steer Roper
Born near Leedy, Oklahoma, in 1907, Buck Goodspeed was raised on a farm near Okemah. He and his brother, Jess, also a top rodeo hand, learned the cowboy trade together.
Competing against champion ropers Ike Rude, Bob Crosby, and Everett Shaw, Buck Goodspeed ranked in his event’s top five for four consecutive years from 1945 to 1948. For three decades the Goodspeeds rodeoed all across the western states.
Buck Goodspeed’s victories included the 1941 Southwest Cowboys Association steer-roping title and the championship at Fort Worth. In that year he also captured first place at Guthrie, Dewey, and Okemah, Oklahoma, and at Baton Rouge, Shreveport, and Lake Charles, Louisiana. He also won titles at Chicago and Tulsa (twice), and twice came in second at Cheyenne. Goodspeed hung up his rope in 1956 and became a rancher and farmer near Wetumka, Oklahoma, until his death in 1991.
