Steer Roper, Champion, 1964, 1966, 1968

Born at Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1935, Christian Frederick “Sonny” Davis competed in rodeo all of his life. His father, Red Davis, was a roper who saw to it that Sonny literally grew up with a rope in his hand. Sonny entered the professional arena for the first time at Carlsbad, New Mexico, in the early 1950s.

In 1966 Sonny Davis was dubbed “the most explosive roper of the last decade.” An aggressive competitor, he went after cattle like a hungry lion. He competed in all of the roping events, but from 1966 to the 1980s he always ranked in the nation’s top 15 steer ropers. He won the National Finals steer-roping title a record 16 times from 1959 to 1980 and held the National Finals average in 1968. He captured the steer-roping championship in 1964, 1966, and 1968.

Sonny Davis retired from the arena in the 1980s. He lived in Weatherford, Texas, until his death in 1991.
