Rodeo Bullfighter
Known as “The Kajun Kidd,” D. J. Gaudin was born at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1929. He grew up breaking horses in local stockyards, and at age 16 he joined Texas Jay Davis’s Wild West Show.
Gaudin’s career in rodeo began as an amateur contestant in rough stock events, but he soon took up bullfighting. In 1952 he joined Bobby Estes’s rodeo productions, later working for famed rodeo promoter Everett Colborn. As “The Kajun Kidd,” Gaudin worked all of the major rodeos, including Madison Square Garden, Denver, Boston Garden, Pendleton, and Cheyenne, as well as hundreds of small venues across the nation.
Rodeo cowboys honored “The Kajun Kidd” in 1959 and 1960 by selecting him to work the National Finals Rodeo. After 28 years of saving cowboys from rampaging bulls, D. J. Gaudin retired from the arena. He resides in Teague, Texas, and ranches near Boerne.
