Of Cherokee heritage, Pat Scudder was born in 1925 and raised on the family ranch near Dewey, Oklahoma. An outstanding athlete as a youth, he joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following military service he worked on the JH Ranch, improving and increasing its horse and cattle herds.

Pat Scudder commenced rodeoing after the war, first as a saddle bronc rider and steer roper, and ultimately contested in nearly every event. He was a member of the Cowboy Turtles Association, the Rodeo Cowboys Association and a gold card member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Scudder was a guiding force in the National Finals Rodeo and proved instrumental in establishing the event in Oklahoma City as NFR General Manager. As a production manager with ABC’s Wide World of Sports, he brought rodeo national exposure on television.

Pat Scudder also played an important role in the organization and dedication of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City. He was inducted into the Will Rogers Rodeo Hall of Fame 2000 and passed away in 2002.
