Lynn Sheppard was born in Globe, Arizona, in 1926 and was raised on a cattle ranch where his whole world consisted of cows, cowboys and horses. He learned to ride and rope at an early age, and entered his first calf-roping and team-roping competition at Show Low, Arizona, at age 15. After army service during World War II, Sheppard ranched and rodeoed with his brother, Chuck, in team and calf roping.

During the 1950s Sheppard competed at venues around the country, including the great rodeos at Madison Square Garden in New York; Omaha, Nebraska; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona; San Francisco and Salinas, California; and Pendleton, Oregon. At Omaha he set a record for the time, wrestling a steer in three seconds flat; at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, he did it in 2.9 seconds. Sheppard won steer wrestling championships at Tucson and Scottsdale, Arizona. He won roping events at Bozeman and Butte, Montana; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Puyallup, Washington; and he was calf roping champion at Christensen Brothers rodeos for the 1952 season.

From his hometown of Globe, Arizona, Sheppard established the Sheppard Construction, Mining and Ranching Company and participated actively in county and state government. He also served as the chairman of the first PRCA rodeo held in Globe. Sheppard passed away in 2008.
