At age 13, Smith attended his first rodeo; after that he knew he wanted to be a cowboy. Smith started riding at county fairs and picnics and in 1945, competed in his first large rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas. Smith won money at all of the major rodeos from 1949 to 1966. He produced rodeos with Bobby Estes and rodeoed with Col. Jim Eskew in Cuba. He accompanied Clem McSpadden on good will tours to Tlaycala and Colmia, Mexico. Smith was inducted to the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in Belton, Texas, in 1999. He holds PRCA Gold Card #159.
