John K. "Jack" Goodman

1920-2018

Arizona

John K. “Jack” Goodman, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, made significant contributions to the Thoroughbred racing industry over the past 50 years. Jack was one of the three founders of the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (RTIP), a program that has become a cornerstone in the industry, placing over 500 graduates in various equine professions.

Jack’s dedication to the sport extended beyond education; he served as an Arizona Racing Commissioner from 1965 to 1985 and was chairman of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners in 1979-80. His influence and leadership were integral to shaping regulations and practices within the racing community.

In addition to his regulatory and educational contributions, Jack was successful as a Thoroughbred owner. Notably, he won the Grand National at Aintree in 1964 with his horse, Team Spirit, and campaigned graded stakes winner Gundaghia, a track record holder, in the 1990s.

Jack Goodman’s legacy is a blend of passion for the sport, commitment to education, and a lifetime of leadership within the Thoroughbred racing industry.
