John M. Holt was a leader in the cattle industry in Montana.
He moved to Montana in 1879, establishing a settlement on Mizpah Creek and organizing the Mizpah Land and Livestock Company with cattle he had brought from Texas.
His LO Ranch eventually ran 15,000 cattle between the Tongue and Powder Rivers. He leased feeding pens in Omaha, Nebraska, feeding 1,000 steers yearly.
He eventually became Director of the Miles City National Bank. He served three terms as president of the Montana Stockgrowers Association and, in 1900, was vice president of the American National Cattleman’s Association.
