Bio

Nick Petry, born in Wyoming and raised in Colorado, was a prominent businessman and rancher who played a significant role in shaping Denver’s development and western heritage. After graduating from the University of Colorado in 1940, he served in WWII, supervising airplane manufacturing plant construction. Returning to Denver, Petry joined his father’s construction company, N. G. Construction, and became its president in the late 1950s. His company contributed to Denver’s skyline and constructed the iconic movable east stands at the original Mile High Stadium.

Petry’s passion for livestock led him to establish the Grizzly Ranch in Walden, Colorado, in 1958, and the Mill Iron Ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming, in 1977. His involvement in the agricultural community extended to his leadership role as president of the National Western Stock Show beginning in 1966. During his 19-year tenure, he oversaw renovations and expansions of the facility and initiated a scholarship fund to support agricultural education. In 1986, he became chairman of the stock show’s board.

Beyond ranching and construction, Petry held various board positions, including at Colorado National Bank, United Airlines, Eaton Corporation, and the Public Service Company of Colorado. He was also active in his alma mater, chairing the CU Foundation board. In recognition of his contributions, Petry was named Citizen of the West in 1986 and inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners in 2002.

Nick Petry’s legacy reflects his deep commitment to his community, ranching heritage, and the development of Denver and the West.
