Oral Zumwalt was born in 1903 at Morenci, Arizona, and spent his youth around horses and cattle on Texas and Arizona ranches. In 1916 the Zumwalt family resettled in Roundup, Montana, where Oral launched his colorful career in rodeo.
At one time or another, Oral Zumwalt contested in every event. He rodeoed in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia (where he roped and tied a kangaroo). In 1939 at a rodeo in Palm Springs, California, Zumwalt won a steer wrestling go-around with an official time of two and four-tenths seconds–still the fastest toss ever recorded.
In later years, Oral Zumwalt was a stock contractor noted for his good bucking horses. The best was Trail’s End, voted National Finals Rodeo bucking horse for four years. Oral Zumwalt died at Big Timber, Montana, in 1962.
