Born at Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1955, Rex Dunn grew up fascinated by the thought of being a rodeo clown. He started out riding bareback broncs and bulls in competition, but soon gravitated toward arena clowning and bull fighting.
Dunn joined the PRCA and was chosen as a bullfighter for the National Finals Rodeo in 1983, 1985, and 1986. Famed rodeo announcer Clem McSpadden called him “Mr. Smooth,” and Dunn lived up to that billing. He was named PRCA Clown of the Year in 1985, and competed in the Wrangler Bullfights from 1981 through 1989, taking reserve world champion in 1985 and 1986.
Dunn later created the Coyote Hills Rodeo Company, where he bred bucking bulls, 138 of which were selected for the NFR. He also taught hundreds of students bullfighting techniques. Dunn was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2010, and passed from the arena in 2012.
