During the 1960s art students at the Institute of American Indian Art and elsewhere changed beadwork into a new art form. Contemporary beadworkers sometimes appropriate the iconic and whimsical images of popular culture for their own artistic expressions, as illustrated by the “tweedy bird” motif on the handbag.
