Moving West: Emigrants Crossing the Plains

Emigrants Crossing the Plains by German born artist, Albert Bierstadt, has been on view at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City since 1972. One of the Museum’s most popular pieces, the 60” x 96” oil on canvas painting is characteristic of Bierstadt’s panoramic style and tradition of oversized paintings, reflecting the grandiose size and spectacle of the American West. The dramatic colors of a golden sunset in the West reflect upon travelers as they moved onward to new and hopeful lives.
