Steer Roper
Born at Arkansas City, Kansas, in 1887, Fred Beeson cowboyed in Oklahoma on the famed Miller Brothers 101 Ranch. He later switched to professional contests and quickly became a top hand in rodeo. A popular performer, he was noted for his colorful attire, always wearing a bow tie and bright striped sweater when he roped in the arena.
During his best years, Beeson placed in the money at all the major venues. He captured the steer-roping title at Pendleton in 1919 and at Cheyenne in 1928, and he was a consistent winner on the Oklahoma circuit throughout the 1920s and early 1930s.
After an accident in 1934, Fred Beeson retired to Arkansas City, Kansas. He died in 1970.
