World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider, 1958, 1964, 1966
Born in 1933 in Bowness, Alberta, Canada, Marty Wood’s first love was baseball. An ankle injury ended that career, but it never kept him from bucking out of the chute on a rogue bronc. He would ride, or attempt to ride, an estimated 5,000 broncs over his peak years in the arena.
A three-time World Champion saddle-bronc rider (1958, 1964 and 1966), Wood also was Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association saddle bronc runner-up four times (1954,1962,1963 and 1967), and a three-time winner of the Canadian saddle bronc championship. He took the aggregate crown at many major rodeos in the United States, and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo fourteen times. By 1974, he was the all-time top money winner in saddle-bronc riding history to that time, having collected some 30 championship buckles
Over the years, Marty Wood has been honored in four different halls of fame, including the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Calgary Stampede Hall in Canada and Ellensburg’s Rodeo Hall of Fame in Washington.
