Bull Rider

Born in Charleston, Arkansas, in 1951, Denny Flynn learned bull riding as a youth on his father’s wild heifers. He entered professional rodeo competition in the 1970s and soon built a solid reputation as a consistent contender. During 12 years of competition, he qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 10 times.

Flynn might be considered the best bull rider never to win a world championship. He finished second in the world behind the legendary Don Gay in 1978 by a mere $283, and again in 1980 by only $188! He nevertheless won a record three NFR bull-riding average titles, and is well remembered for his 98-point score on Red Lightning in 1979. In 2002 he was awarded the Professional Bull Riders Ring of Honor.

Following his competitive career, Denny Flynn has conducted numerous bull-riding clinics for aspiring contenders and has worked extensively with the Arkansas High School Rodeo Association in inspiring new participants in the sport.
