Luster Bayless’ distinguished career as a costume designer and costumer spans decades and continents, shaping the visual language of some of the most iconic Western films ever made. Working on location throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico and Asia, Bayless brought unmatched authenticity, craftsmanship and historical accuracy to every production he touched.

Over the course of his career, he collaborated with some of Hollywood’s most legendary directors, including John Ford, Henry Hathaway, Howard Hawks, Don Siegel, Francis Ford Coppola, Andrew McLaglen and Hal Needham. His keen eye for detail and dedication to realism helped define the golden age of Western cinema and left an enduring influence on the genre.

In 1980, Bayless founded United American Costume Corp., where he served as CEO and continued to shape the field by providing historically accurate costumes for major film and television productions.

His extensive filmography includes work on classics such as “True Grit,” “Rooster Cogburn,” “Comes a Horseman,” “The Shootist,” “McQ,” “Cahill U.S. Marshal,” “Tom Horn,” “Gunsmoke: The Last Apache” and Needham hits such as “Smokey and the Bandit” and “The Villain.” Bayless also contributed to Coppola’s epic “Apocalypse Now,” bringing his expertise to one of the most ambitious films of its era.

Across a career marked by artistry, precision and storytelling excellence, Luster Bayless has left an indelible mark on American cinema.
