A former top-rated quarterback at Boise State University in Idaho, Dee Pickett was born in 1955 at San Diego, California. He attended college on a football scholarship and entered professional rodeo in 1978.

Dee Pickett specialized in calf roping and team roping. His first year brought him the PRCA Rookie of the Year award, which he quickly followed with many victories in his two events. He competed in the NFR every year from 1979 through the 1990s. In 1984 Pickett capped his competitive career with the all-around championship and the team-roping title, and he also placed second in calf roping.

From 1986 through the mid-1990s, Dee Pickett stayed in the nation’s top 15 all-around cowboys and usually took home team-roping honors wherever he appeared.
