Born in 1897 in a covered wagon at Lula, Oklahoma, John Wesley McEntire was an early-day rodeo hand. A true itinerant cowboy, in his youth he often rode horseback from rodeo to rodeo, leading a spare mount that carried his gear.
John McEntire progressed to larger rodeos in the 1920s and 1930s. He competed in the steer roping at Cheyenne, New York, and other major venues, usually finishing at or near the top. McEntire’s son, Clark, followed his father in the rodeo profession, winning the steer-roping championship three times in the 1950s and 1960s.
John Wesley McEntire died in 1976 and is buried at Coalgate, Oklahoma.
