EVENTS
Calf Roper
Steer Wrestler
Horse Trainer
Born in 1886 at Brownwood, Texas, Edward Bowman grew up around horses on his grandfather’s ranch outside Weed, New Mexico. A rodeo star throughout the 1920s, his career later was eclipsed by the arena exploits of his younger brother, Everett.
Until 1930, Edward Bowman was a consistent winner in calf roping, bulldogging, and team roping. He is credited with training one of the first roping horses–Back-Up Pete–to maintain a taut rope while the rider tossed and tied his calf. An expert horseman, Bowman was unbeatable in “strap and cinch” relay racing, an event he won nine years in a row.
Edward Bowman knew and loved good horses. During the 1940s and 1950s, he raised many great quarter horses and contested often with the Western States Cutting Horse Association. Bowman died in 1961 and was buried at Safford, Arizona.
