Born Lionel Bert Cox at Sonora, Texas, in 1900, “Breezy” Cox was a talented all-around rodeo hand in the sport’s early years. Raised in southeastern New Mexico, he made a living as a working cowboy there and in Arizona before entering rodeo.

Breezy Cox competed during the sport’s most important developmental decades, 1920-1940. Contesting against other seasoned cowboys, Cox won the Calgary Stampede’s bucking-horse championship in 1925 and the calf-roping crown at the same venue in 1926. He rodeoed at Cheyenne and all of the important venues of the day. During the 1930s Cox also contracted stock for local rodeos in New Mexico.

After hanging up his spurs, Breezy Cox made his home in Pinetop, Arizona, where he trained thoroughbred race horses. He died in 1960.
