Steer Wrestler, Champion, 1929, 1931, 1937
Born at Sayre, Oklahoma, in 1904, Gene Ross was one of rodeo’s most proficient bulldoggers. He entered his first rodeo at Comanche, Oklahoma, in 1922.
Always a consistent winner at the major venues in the 1920s and 1930s, Gene Ross won the steer-wrestling championship three times, in 1929, 1931, and 1937. During his career he often beat many of his generation’s great bulldoggers.
A tough man and a born showman, Ross often rode despite injury. Once, with his leg in a cast, he took on a bronc at the Cheyenne Frontier Days. Gene Ross retired from the arena around 1940 and died in 1987.
