Steer Wrestler

Everett “Slim” Whaley, born at Morgan, Texas, in 1899, was one of the sport’s top all-around hands. Whaley did it all–steer wrestling, roping, and bronc riding.

One of his most important contributions to the sport was his ability as a horse trainer. He always roped or bulldogged off a good mount. Whaley’s roan ‘dogging horse, Little Blue, was one of the greatest to ever grace an arena. In 1946 every steer wrestler in competition at the Monte Vista, California, Rodeo rode Whaley’s Little Blue–among them Homer Pettigrew, Buckshot Sorrels, Tater Decker, and Eddie Curtis.

After retiring from rodeo Slim Whaley worked for Beutler Brothers livestock contractors. During rodeos he often worked with Elra Beutler as part of the pickup team. He died in 1999.
