Steer Roper, Champion, 1916
Saddle Bronc Rider

Born on July 20, 1883 and raised around Marlin, Texas, Henry Grammar cowboyed for ranches in Texas and Montana before settling in Osage County, Oklahoma, in 1907. There he married, ranched and commenced following the rodeo circuit.

Grammar roped and rode at Cheyenne, Pendleton, Fort Worth, Madison Square Garden and countless smaller venues. During the winter of 1909-1910, he traveled to South America with fellow roper J. Ellison Carroll and the cowboys of the IXL Wild West Show. In 1912 he helped his friend Guy Weadick stage the first Calgary Stampede, where he rode broncs and steer roped. Grammar also cowboyed in London in 1914 with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show, and, in 1916 at Weadick’s Sheepshead Bay Stampede, he was declared the World Champion Steer Roper.

Closer to home, Grammar participated in the Dewey (Oklahoma) Roundup from its 1908 debut until 1922. And he served as a judge at Fort Worth’s annual Fat Stock Show Rodeo from 1920 to 1922. Henry Grammar died in an automobile accident in 1923, a month before his 40th birthday.
