Curator Conversations: “As God Has Made It”: Landscape Painting in the American West

August 9, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

August 9, 2022 @ 6:00 pm 7:15 pm

Painters who were trained in the transcendentalist and Hudson River “schools” began traveling to the American West and other exotic parts of the Americas beginning in the late 1850s. These artists sought healing for the United States in the canvases they produced from the time of the Civil War to World War I. Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Frederic Edwin Church, Charles Franklin Reaugh and Thomas Hill are among those artists whose work will be discussed as they sought to capture the West for personal relief and as a public service.
