Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at The Cowboy! Master rawhide and horsehair braider Luis Ortega descended from the original Spanish settlers of Santa Barbara, California and lived the code “Always Finish What You Start”. He learned the basics of rawhide and leather work at an early age. At age 14, he left home, began cowboying and later served in the military. It wasn’t until after World War I that he began to braid leather again, making reatas, ropes, bridles and more. Through commitment and dedication, Ortega elevated a cowboy craft to fine art. View Luis Ortega’s works and create your own braid to take home.
