Born in 1898 at Augusta, Georgia, Florence Hughes got her first riding experience on plow mules. After joining a Wild West show at age 14, she soon rose to fame in Roman racing, trick riding, and ladies’ bronc riding.

In 1919, at the Calgary Stampede, Florence made international headlines when she defeated 13 male contenders in Roman race riding. At the height of her career in the 1920s, she dominated the trick and fancy riding arena on a steady paint horse named Boy. In 1927 Florence Randolph captured the first MGM Trophy awarded to the champion all-around cowgirl at the Madison Square Garden rodeo. She also performed in various Wild West Shows, raced motorcycles, and doubled in movie stunts.

In 1925, Florence Hughes married Floyd Randolph, a rodeo hand and saddler. For many years they helped produce and manage the annual Ardmore, Oklahoma, rodeo. Florence Hughes Randolph died in 1971 at her Ardmore home.
