One of the best-coordinated athletes in rodeo, Phil Lyne was born in 1947 at San Antonio, Texas. On his way up, he captured 42 trophy saddles competing in the five main events with the National High School and Intercollegiate Rodeo Associations.

Phil Lyne entered professional rodeo in 1969 and won the PRCA Rookie of the Year title. In 1971 he took the calf-roping championship on 46 different horses, undoubtedly a record. Lyne received the Bill Linderman Memorial Award in 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1976 for winning at least $1,000 in three events combining timed and rough stock competition.

Phil Lyne retired from full-time professional rodeo at the pinnacle of his career in 1972. Called the “finest all-around hand in history,” he now devotes his time to a crossbred cattle operation at George West, Texas.
