Born in 1932 at Del Rio, Texas, Jim Bob Altizer was raised on a ranch where roping was a way of life. He began rodeoing while still in school. After capturing the 1947 Texas State High School Calf Roping Championship and the 1948 National High School Calf Roping Championship, he turned professional in 1950.
By the 1960s Jim Bob Altizer was a proven contender in calf roping and steer roping. In his twenty-six-year career he garnered seven roping titles at San Antonio, five at Phoenix, and two at Houston. He is also acknowledged as the greatest match roper of all time and garnered a following of devoted fans who regularly attended his performances.
In 1976, at the West Texas Boys Ranch Rodeo, Jim Bob Altizer entered and won his last professional match roping, afterward retiring to his Del Rio, Texas, ranch. He died in 1997.
