Bio

B. Byron Price recently retired as Director of the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of the American West and held the Charles Marion Russell Memorial Chair at the University of Oklahoma. With nearly 25 years of experience in the museum profession, Price previously served as executive director of the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in Texas, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Wyoming.

A 1970 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Price earned a master’s degree in Museum Science from Texas Tech University in 1977. His extensive career in Western American history and art includes the authorship of more than three dozen articles and over 14 books and monographs. Notable works include Edward Borein: Etched by the West (2021), Picturing Indian Territory (2016), The Sons of Charlie Russell (2014), and Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonné (2007).

Price’s contributions extend beyond publishing, as he has served as a consultant for television series on the History and Discovery Channels. His work showcases his passion for preserving and interpreting the history, culture, and art of the American West. Through his scholarship and leadership, Price has significantly shaped the understanding and appreciation of Western heritage, leaving an enduring legacy in the fields of museum curation and academic study.
