Richard King (1824-1885) was an American entrepreneur and visionary rancher, best known as the founder of the legendary King Ranch in South Texas, one of the largest and most influential cattle ranches in U.S. history. Born in New York City, King had humble beginnings, working as an apprentice to a jeweler before running away to pursue a life at sea. By his early 20s, he had risen to the rank of riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, where he gained valuable experience that would later serve him well in business.
In the 1840s, King moved to Texas, where he piloted steamboats on the Rio Grande. His entrepreneurial spirit flourished as he became involved in the region’s cattle industry. In 1853, King purchased his first piece of land in what is now South Texas, marking the beginning of King Ranch. Over the years, through strategic acquisitions and partnerships, including with his close friend Gideon “Legs” Lewis, King expanded his holdings to over 825,000 acres.
King pioneered ranching techniques, introducing innovative practices like crossbreeding cattle to adapt to the harsh Texas environment. His foresight and dedication transformed King Ranch into a major enterprise, which played a significant role in shaping the American cattle industry.
