New Mexico

Bio

Thomas Mitchell was a pioneering New Mexico cattleman. After working as a trail cutter in Oklahoma, he was hired by the Dubuque Cattle Company, which had a large free-range herd in northeastern New Mexico.

When the Dubuque Cattle Company sold out in 1896-97, Mitchell bought the deeded land the company owned in the Tequesquite Valley and built his own ranch. He brought to the valley the first registered Herefords in New Mexico. He also added thoroughbreds and quarter horses.

He took an active interest in public affairs around New Mexico, serving six years as a state senator. He was one of the organizers of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association.
