Rodeo Manager

Floyd Gale, born in 1895 in Denton County, Texas, came to Oklahoma’s Indian Territory in 1896 with his family. At age 15, he entered professional competition at Stonewall, Oklahoma, as a calf and steer roper.

Through the 1920s Gale contested in one rodeo every week, roping calves, milking wild cows, and jockeying in the races. Over his entire career he won a championship at every major Oklahoma rodeo. Gale’s rodeo experience took him into management in the 1930s. In 1939 he became director of the Tulsa Stampede (later called the Johnnie Lee Wills Stampede), a post he held through the mid-1960s. He also worked the Madison Square Garden rodeo as a judge for seven years.

Remembered for being able to spot good bucking stock for the rodeo, Floyd Gale ranched near Morris, Oklahoma, until his death in 1980.
