Steer Roper

Born at Neodesha, Kansas, in 1936, intercollegiate rodeo star Sonny Worrell attended Oklahoma State University before entering his first professional competition in 1958. In his rookie year he won the calf roping and captured the all-around championship at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.

In the 1960s and 1970s Sonny Worrell was a contender in roping events and in steer wrestling, finishing in the money at most of the big rodeos. In 28 years of competition at Cheyenne, he garnered 25 titles in three events.

While performing in Houston’s Astrodome in 1970, Worrell injured his leg, ending his bulldogging career. After recovering, he continued to rope steers. Over a two-decade career, Sonny Worrell qualified for the National Finals seven times in calf roping and nine times in steer roping. He captured the steer-roping championship in 1978.
