Born in 1968 at Billings, Montana, four-time saddle-bronc champion Dan Mortensen is one of the “new breed” of rodeo cowboys. While still pursuing an Ag-Business major at Montana State University, he went professional, capturing the PRCA Saddle Bronc Rookie of the Year title in 1990.

Specializing in saddle-bronc riding, Mortensen won the Montana Circuit Finals title seven times in eight years between 1989 and 1996, took the College National Finals Rodeo championship in 1991, captured the Coors Rodeo Showdown Saddle-Bronc championship in 1993, and won the Wrangler World of Rodeo series championship in 1994. Missing the world saddle-bronc riding title in 1996, he nevertheless recorded victories at Calgary, San Angelo, Colorado Springs and Oklahoma City.

Qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo in seven of eight years to date, the athletic Mortensen has gathered four World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider titles and sufficient winnings in 1997 to capture the coveted All-Around Cowboy crown. Along the way, he also has become another “million dollar cowboy,” a label still held by few in the sport.
