EVENTS
Steer Wrestler, Champion, 1970

Born at Fresno in 1932, John W. Jones grew up on a cattle ranch near Clovis, California. As a youth, he enjoyed roping and entered local amateur and RCA rodeos near his home. Following a two-year stint in the military, Jones obtained his professional rodeo card and started bulldogging.

During his first year, John W. Jones won steer wrestling money at Denver and Madison Square Garden, and he captured the very first “Rookie of the Year” title. His impressive bull-dogging feats won him the event finals at Oklahoma City four times in 1965, 1968, 1969 and 1970, when he also captured the championship title in steer wrestling.

John W. Jones retired from the rodeo arena after his victorious 1970 season. He now resides in Morro Bay, California. Following in his footsteps, his son, John W. Jones, Jr., won the PRCA Champion Steer Wrestler title in 1984.

Rodeo Hall of Fame inductee John W. Jones Sr. died October 6, 2013 at age 81.
