Bareback Bronc Rider
Born at Gordon, Nebraska, in 1927, Bob Cullison learned to ride on the family ranch. After the loss of his parents, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. He joined the Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1946 as a rough-stock rider.
Cullison’s competitive career extended until 1965, and he was a regular among the top 20 in bareback bronc riding and bull riding during two decades. He won various titles throughout the country, including the 1954 Ellensburg, Washington, bull-riding title and the 1961 Cheyenne Frontier Days bareback-riding title. He captured the bull riding championship at the Days of ’76 Rodeo in Deadwood, South Dakota, in 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1960 and split the bareback riding with Jack Buschbom in 1962. And he qualified for the first National Finals Rodeo in 1959.
Bob Cullison founded Cowboy Timber Treating Inc., in 1960 and ran that successful business for 36 years. He was a member of numerous civic committees and organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. Cullison died in 2000.
