John Mantley was a Canadian-born writer, producer, and actor whose career spanned the golden age of radio, theater, and television. A World War II Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, he later trained at the Pasadena Playhouse and built an award-winning stage career. Mantley worked in Canadian radio before moving into television production and writing, eventually becoming the longtime producer of Gunsmoke. He earned multiple Western Heritage Awards, a Spur Award, and the William F. Cody Award, and was a key advocate for creative independence in television.
