The southwestern Chippewa lived mainly north of the Great Lakes region in Canada. Starting in the 1600s, they migrated into parts of Minnesota and North Dakota. Like many other tribes coming onto the Plains, the Chippewa adopted some of the lifeways of the new region, including the adaption of the horse in hunting and warfare.
