Turbans are an old form of headwear among Native Americans. It is believed that they probably originated among eastern Woodlands tribes and gradually became accepted by Southern Plains tribes. Skin turbans, such as this, were popular among many Woodlands cultures but were limited to a few Nations on the Prairie and Southern Plains.
